firstly look at Bronx writers and their concept of letter structure, aside from all the candy coating in a piece, make sure the letters are dope.
same can be said for a bboy, heres two examples....
bboy number one, comes into the circle lookin all bummy, clothes wayyyy too baggy, has no sense of rhythm when it comes to rockin a beat, and does some sloppy back flip, and rolls back into a hollow back.....
bboy 2, fitting gear, clean cut and fresh, steps into the circle on beat, and in rhythm, does his things, clean, has a very defined foundation, even when he does his own signature stuff, a trained eye can see it when he chooses to include some text book foundational stuff. he finishes clean and exits after his run comes to an obvious close.
the point is the better version of the classical bboy in the original sense of the word would be the second bboy, even when he chooses to do his own style, as abstract as it may be you can see the solid skeletal structure of a bboy inside it no matter what. On the other hand you have bboy 1, who thinks all it takes to be a bboy is 10 people standing in a circle and taking turns impressing each other in the middle.
Graffiti is not about having more colors in your piece then the guy next to you, or having more arrows then there is directions to point at, the point is letter structure as the base, and the rest built out of that structure, what makes a good graffiti artist is the dopeness of the original lettering, and how the rest compliments it.
If you want to learn graffiti, look at the structure of peoples pieces first, understand the lettering, and if you cant read it because the letters are messed up, its ok to say "yo thats bad graffiti" not because you cant read it, but because the lettering wasnt executed properly from the first step on up.
